India Needs Immediate Equitable Distribution of COVID-19 Vaccines.
Every $12 raised will support a full vaccination, mask, and nutrition package for someone in need in India.
Since the start of the second COVID-19 wave in India, over 3,000 people are dying each day, which is 1 death every 5 minutes. These numbers are still believed to be grossly underreported and the extent of this horrific situation in India has been pouring out through SOS WhatsApp messages, videos of people pleading for oxygen, and family members driving throughout the night in search of a hospital bed.
However, with the arrival of vaccines, India has a real fighting chance against the virus.
The Government of India needs to implement the world’s largest vaccination program. To date, only 9% of the population has been partially vaccinated and only 1.8% has been fully vaccinated. Recent amendments to the vaccine guidelines and inclusions for everyone above the age of 18 years have provided for greater opportunities for Governments and the private sector to collaborate on mass vaccination campaigns, ensuring that no one is left behind.
Together for India is a joint collaboration between the Global India Fund (GIF), a US-based 501c3 organization, and the Collective Good Foundation (CGF) in India. With vaccinated communities, the spread of the virus can be curbed, and people are able to go back to work and care for their families. Vaccines are THE PUBLIC HEALTH SOLUTION.
To ensure that vaccines are equitably distributed among marginalized communities and those in need, GIF and CGF are working with local organizations in India to provide financial support directly towards COVID-19 vaccination acquisition and distribution. GIF/CGF will support the purchasing of COVID-19 vaccines (if necessary), increase vaccine awareness, decrease vaccine hesitancy, strengthen and build capacity to administer vaccines to disadvantaged groups. GIF and CGF have a long-standing partnership and are working with credible existing partners to set up vaccination centers in local communities in India. We believe trusted partners in the community will combat vaccine hesitancy and ensure that those most in need will be vaccinated. Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have been actively working on the ground with implementation partners (NGOs, corporations, and foundations) and local governments as part of the REVIVE initiative. REVIVE is a multi-million dollar micro-enterprise development facility set up to improve livelihood outcomes for 250,000 individuals and micro-entrepreneurs by giving them financial support through multiple financial instruments as well as technical assistance, and is in collaboration with multiple NGOs and supported by USAID, Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, Omidyar Network India, the British High Commission, and UNDP to name a few. We will overlay the vaccine distribution program with REVIVE communities to quickly and effectively distribute vaccines.
For $12 per person, we have a clear opportunity to make a difference as we are engaging with an expansive NGO network, municipal and state governments, hospitals, and healthcare workers to implement:
1. Vaccination Drives: Local camps and mobile vaccination units are being organized in the communities for ease of access to its citizens.
2. Nutrition Packages: These camps would also be opened as access points to provide nutrition packages to the vaccinated citizens in these local communities.
3. Masks: While vaccinations would ensure a significant reduction in mortality, active cases and improve herd immunity, it is important that people keep their guards up. Masks would remain a critical ammunition in this fight.
