Imagine being told that the disease your child suffers from, may die from, isn’t significant enough to fund research. That no significant research, not even a test to confirm a diagnosis, is on the horizon. A horizon that doesn’t support hope and encouragement is beyond disheartening. This sorrow was the situation the Onorato family found themselves in when their son, Thomas Kevin Onorato, was born with Microvillus Inclusion Disease (MVID)– critical intestinal failure. MVID is a genetic disease that makes the body's normal ability to absorb nutrients impossible. There is no cure and treatments are simply about survival.
Thomas’ family didn’t accept the status quo. They needed to fight back against a disease, complete inaction, and a general lack of awareness of MVID. They honed their resources and formed the TKO Strong Foundation. Created as a 501(c)(3) charity, the foundation was designed to make a change. And, from a small band of friends and families collecting donations, it grew to an efficient force that advocates, conducts a multitude of unique fundraisers, provides mini-grants for afflicted families seeking treatment, expedites grants for national and international research endeavors, and advances public awareness and activism.
To date, the organization has provided over $150,000 dollars for research projects to Boston Children’s Hospital/Harvard and University Medical Center Groningen/Netherlands. Additionally, family grants of $5,000 are provided to support families struggling financially with this unforgiving intestinal disease.
The TKO Strong Foundation identified that the status quo wasn’t going to be an effective model. We are about making a real difference. But to continue to make a difference, to dramatically shift the paradigm, we need your support. Please consider making a donation – as part of Rare Disease Day (February 28th) - that will directly support research, families receiving financial assistance while their child receives treatment, awareness efforts and advocating on behalf of the MVID community.
Please consider making a donation today on Crowdrise. Be an agent of change, change the horizon for these young children and their families. Giving is a lifestyle, not an occasion.
