I like to start with dates. The 24 hour balls-to-the walls, cream-to-the-screams show is in December. But I am writing this on the eve of November. And in doing so, thinking back on a past November:
November 2014 was an important one.
Do you remember what you were doing November 2014? Obama was still in office, Hunger Games 1 had recently came out, I thought it was the year that Hannukah and Thanksgiving were on the same day but, check it out, I just googled it and learned I was off by a year. That was 2013.
Does Noveber 2014 feel like November 2013? What were you doing in November of 2014? Were you in Chicago? Or waiting to wake up here? Were you happily abroad in a place you now miss? Had you just discovered something unexpcted about yourself or uncovered the fossil of who you were. Were you making art or feeling stuck? Were you ending, starting, skating through a complicated and perfectly boring relationship? Were you sitting in a pile of to do lists hand on your chin sighing and thinking, just thinking, about how 2014 was a leap year? ARE YOU THE KIND OF PERSON WHO THINKS ABOUT LEAP YEARS ALL OF THE TIME? OH MY GOD YOU ARE! I KNEW IT! WHY DO DO YOU THINK ABOUT LEAP YEARS ALL OF THE TIME? I DON'T GET IT THAT'S A STRANGE-ASS QUIRK.
What is different about that November, the November of 2014, and this November, the November of 2019 for you? What is exactly, if anything, the same?
November 2014: was an important one for me. November 2014: I read about myself on that Theater website broadway world
Novmber 2014: The Neofuturists Welcome New Ensemble Members.
and one of them was me.
In November 2014 I was taken under the wing of a theater company of wildly productive, creative, thoughtful and righteous humans. I started making art at a rigourous pace, and never stopped. So November 2014 turned into November 2015, 16, 17, 18, 19.... I have set my goal to raise $2,642 to roughly reflect the number of days (from the November of that article to the December 8th of the TIW 24 show) that I will have been a Neofuturist ensemble member.
Some people like to donate to things "In the name of" or "on behalf of". It's like those benches in parks, the people's whose names are on them aren't the people that bought them. They are their family. And as almost self centered and congratulatory as it sounds I am kinda asking you, as my family, to donate to support the Neos on behalf of, in the name of, the me of 2014. Like the people on benches she's kinda dead now but her memory very much alive. She was a new cast member who, like many new cast members before her, and many new cast members to come, had big BIG thoughts and for the first time was given the blackbox and a deadline to run havoc on and committ to.
I am asking you to donate in the name of the you of 2014. Maybe you saw a show at the Neos in November of 2014 for the first time! That would be a nice coincidence for this bit. You thought: I feel seen, heard, touched. And remembering this now you grab your wallet.
Or maybe you had already been a regular to the theater. But In November 2014 there was that ONE play. That ONE joke...that's a November of 2014 joke! We can all still laugh cause a monster isn't our president - donate in the memory of 2014 a year that is good maybe only insomuch as it was pre-that guy.
Or maybe you saw your first show alot later. Welcome friend, lets say you saw your first show in 2018 . (also a LEAP YEAR! YEAHHHH I AM ONTO YOU, YOU FUCK!) But, BUT the you of 2018 contains the you of 2014 and during this very show the two you's recognized eachother inside your body stuffed in your sweater with nametag that said "Macaroni." During whatever November show that was, they held eachother underneath our crumbling ceiling and semi-extinguishing lights and they didn't want to let eachother go. Donate for that weird out of body experience you totally had. And that you continue to have time and time again when you come to this theater. Donate on behalf of self recognition and the joy and fear that all of that brings.
OR fuck, I don't know, you weird leap year loving ding dong, donate 'cause you got to the end of this way too long plea for moneys and what the fuck else are you still doing here?

~ ABOUT THE NEO-FUTURISTS ~
As a non-profit arts organization, TIW24 (previously Can't Stop//Won't Stop) is the annual fundraiser of The Neo-Futurist Theater. Since 1988, the mission of The Neo-Futurists has been to create “work that embraces those unreached or unmoved by conventional theater – inspiring them to thought, feeling and action.” While the company has changed in many ways after 30 years, that mission remains consistent, pushing the art-making to move audiences that demand honest communication and reflection in an increasingly fast-paced, hyperbolic world.
We believe in art and performance that defies convention and exercises radical compassion, continually growing and changing to meet/exceed necessities of accessibility, equitability, and accountability. To make that kind of art, we depend on the support of people just like you.
All the ways you can help The Neo-Futurists:
-- Donate to TIW24 now! Or, before December 8th.
-- Join the Team, and ask your extended networks to benefit The Neo-Futurists
-- Attend the culminating of TIW24 on December 8 @ 7:00PM, at The Neo-Futurist Theater.
