WHO ARE WE: Heart of Ukraine Ministries is a US 501(3)(c) tax exempt charity organization, established in 2007. Our Ukrainian non-profit charity organization, Vinntysia – Heart of Ukraine, was founded in 2008. We, Rev. Mark and Laura Bohanan, have been onsite missionaries in Ukraine for almost 13 years now. Previously we worked with post USSR immigrants in the Sacramento California area for years, as well as annually visiting Ukraine, before moving to Ukraine.
MAIN MINISTRIES: David’s House Rehab Center has been operational for near 11 years and is located in the small village of Khomutyntsi, Ukraine; population of 200 people. David’s House is a homeless shelter mainly in the winter months and a rehabilitation center all year long. Our feeding ministry provides hot meals and tea to the homeless and needy in the city of Vinnytsia; over 8,000 meals in 2019 and over 88,000 since 2008. Building projects, gardening, animal husbandry, cooking/culinary, wood working, and metal work are just some of the skills we teach the rehab men, while focusing on cognitive behavior decision making. We live life with the men, sided by side, day in and day out, all the while loving them and sharing God’s Biblical principles.
BEING SELF-RELIANT: We raise most of our own food in our gardens as well as for our animals (pigs, chickens, rabbits, geese, Muscovy ducks, etc). The food is grown and raised for the men at David’s House but also for our street feeding program. Crops and piglets are donated to needy families within our village, and on top of that we also distribute dry goods and other products we receive through a large store in the city, the Kyiv Food Bank and the Red Cross.
CURRENT MACHINES: Our 8 year old motoblock (walk behind tiller) and our 5 year old mini tractor (same thing but with 4 wheels) are dying fast and they constantly need repairs. They can’t keep up with all the work, and they really were not made to handle as much land as we have; they are meant for 1 acre or less, and we work between 5 and 10 acres. These machines are used for garden work mainly (i.e., spreading compost, plowing, tilling, seeding, bringing in the harvesting, etc.). However, we also use them to deliver chopped wood, food boxes and other items to needy families within our village, as well as performing Good Neighbor Projects (i.e., clearing land for the village cemetery, moving grain for elderly couples, etc.).
NEW TRACTOR: After days of researching and visiting dealers, we have narrowed the choice of a tractor to the DTZ 2400, which is 24 horsepower. It has double the power and traction we currently have, plus it has hydraulics and a wider range of attachments. The cost for the new tractor is about $6,400 (depending on the USD and UAH exchange rates) with approximately $1,000 for a cab.
Please consider how you can invest in the lives of the needy here in Ukraine. Hope is being sown and dignity given, which is changing lives !
