In March of this year, Thursday played an amazing show (as always!) at The Fillmore in downtown Silver Spring, Maryland. At this show, Thursday proudly displayed a banner supporting refugees and the ACLU. What the crowd may not have known was that merely 100 yards down the road, the International Rescue Committee has a local office where, among other services, we assist new refugee families immediately after arriving with:
• Furnished homes and initial rental assistance
• Securing initial employment and job upgrades
• Health care and access to nutritious, affordable food
• English language classes and education for the children
• Legal services toward residency and citizenship
Across the country, each year, the IRC serves over 35,000 individuals with an array of services aimed at helping them to survive, reclaim control of their future and strengthen their communities. In Maryland, the IRC serves more refugees per year than any other organization.
As a nearly lifelong fan of Thursday, who has worked at the IRC in Maryland for five years, seeing Thursday publically support US refugee resettlement was very cool. Now on December 27th, Thursday is coming back to Maryland to play in Baltimore, where our sister IRC Maryland office operates. We reached out to Thursday and they graciously offered to support our work in Maryland via their social media.
Please join us at the show in Baltimore and consider making a donation on this page to support our work. These funds will directly assist new refugee families beginning their lives in Maryland.
