"The Refuge" provides emergency shelter to homeless men, women, and children in Otsego County, MI. It was started by area churches and friends in 2013-4 to keep men and women off the streets in winter months by using church facilities.
It has now evolved to provide not only food and overnight accommodations but help in navigating the system of available health and social services. The goal is still to provide emergency overnight housing but also to help clients find permanent housing, ending their homelessness.
The Refuge does not have a residential facility. It provides housing using local community resources, putting donor gifts back into the local community. Since October 1, the Refuge has provided 298 overnight stays for 49 adults and 14 children. It has been an active community partner in meeting local need during the COVID-19 crisis. The virus has had a devastating effect on both health and economics in our communities. The funds you give today will help us meet future needs as the aftereffects on our economy, including anticipated sustained high unemployment, affect this vulnerable population. Specifically, your gift will help to extend the services of The Refuge past the normal winter months.
