This year I am honored to be running the Boston Marathon for The Children’s Room, an amazing organization in Arlington, Massachusetts. The Children’s Room offers hope and healing to children and teens ages 3 – 18 who have experienced the death of a parent or sibling. Parents and caregivers are also provided with opportunities to meet with each other and talk about their own experiences parenting a grieving child, and to give and receive support around their own grief.
I recently learned about this wonderful organization from a runner friend who volunteers for The Children’s Room and also coaches the marathon team. It immediately struck a chord with me, and hit close to home. I remember losing my own mother as a 6-year-old child as if it were yesterday, and I have grieved her loss many times over since then. I remember the weeks, months, and initial years following her death as a somewhat private struggle that felt very isolating at times. While I recall leaning on my amazing dad and my wonderful 8 and 1 year old brothers and feeling very close to them around her death and in the years that followed, I think the opportunity to share the experience with others in a similar position and benefit from the support of a group of caring, committed individuals like those at The Children’s Room would have been tremendous.
I recently had the opportunity to visit The Children’s Room, meet the staff and some of the volunteers, and learn more about the organization. The people who staff the center are wonderful – kind, caring, empathetic people who just seem to get it and draw on a wealth of experience to offer extraordinary care to children and families in great need. The rooms and halls of the center are full of warmth, love, and hope. It is amazing to see the ways grieving children and teens are able to engage at The Children’s Room, be part of a very special community, and express and share what they are experiencing in a myriad of ways.
I am thrilled that I have learned about this organization, and feel privileged to have the opportunity to extend my support to such a worthy cause. I am very grateful for any donation you may consider to support this amazing place! My heartfelt thanks in advance.
