Redhouse Bagels' beloved regular customer, Walt was recently placed in a memory care facility due because his Alzheimer's care became too much for his family. Our staff received a touching letter from his wife thanking them for their patience and kindness with Walt over the years. We posted the letter on social media and were amazed by the response it generated. Having experienced the effects of Alzheimer's in our own family, we decided to use the outpouring of love and support by contributing to the cause. We named his favorite sandwich after him, "The Walt" and are donating a portion of every sale of that sandwich to the Alzheimer's Association Delaware Valley Chapter.
Please take a minute to read the letter from Walt's wife. It's was such a blessing to be part of his life and especially to see the incredible response in kindness from near and far!!
"To the staff at Redhouse Bagels,
My husband is the man who, every Sunday after mass, came in with a laminated paper for his order. We did this so he would not forget what he liked for breakfast...you see, he suffered from Alzheimer's Disease. In later times, I encouraged him to hand it to the cashier so he didn't have to speak his order.
Everyone was kind, courteous and patient. Please know how important this was to him and myself that no one treated him any different and always allowed him to take his time to get his point across - and did it with a smile, even though it was 7 am on a Sunday rush.
Walt has entered Memory Care and will not be returning to Redhouse Bagels, but I certainly did not want your kindness to go unnoticed. Please know that you did such a wonderful thing for someone who suffered from an illness that has no cure. Thank you for always treating him with respect.
