Spring is the time for family, fun, and the sounds of children’s laughter. Sadly, this year, due to the COVID-19 outbreak, spring will be a sad occasion for many families in our community, especially those who have fallen on hard times.
To combat the spread of the coronavirus, physical distance measures are being instituted around the world. But for those who are experiencing homelessness and insecure housing, safety measures are not only out of reach, they are not an option.
Family Promise of Southwestern Pennsylvania helps individuals and families experiencing homelessness with shelter, meals, case management, homelessness prevention, and stabilization services. They believe families should stay together-not be separated-during the most difficult time in their lives. They operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, offering evening meals and overnight accommodations.
Family Promise knows that the homeless are even more vulnerable during a public health crisis. The health and safety of these individuals is Family Promise’s priority. Family Promise had to uproot and move individuals and families from the shelters into temporary living situations. Also, they are providing support to the many individuals who have recently left the shelter setting, that have been laid off or their wages have been cut.
My father, Thomas Hayes’, greatest passion in life was to devote his time to help those less fortunate. He recently passed away and we miss him every day. He had a special place in his heart for Family Promise of Southwestern PA. He was able to significantly impact the lives of countless families who had fallen on hard times. He would host food drives, deliver groceries, serve countless meals to local families; he would even take homeless children trick-or-treating to uplift their spirits.
My family has made a promise during these unprecedented times, to further my Dad’s dedication by reaching out and seeking donations to support Family Promise. Now, more than ever, organizations like Family Promise need our support. To support the effort, we are asking for monetary donations from anybody who can give. This will help Family Promise provide meals for thousands of families in our community. A little can certainly go a long way!
In honor of Giving Tuesday, Gofundme Charity is matching initial gifts up to the first $1000 raised, but must be collected by May 10th. Please help us in giving a little bit of hope to those who need it right now the most.
With Love from our Family,
