Ten years ago…
The Resource Exchange was a bunch of volunteers (friends, folks on film crews, moms & dads— everyone we could get!) in a no-electricity, no-plumbing warehouse pulling nails from truckloads of film set lumber to save it from the landfill for creative reuse. Boxes of props, bags of textiles & more followed, and we saved over 30 tons from the landfill that summer!
Fast forward 10 years…
Over 400 tons of saved materials and two locations later, we have grown into Philadelphia’s creative reuse center. Our community has used us as a resource and has repurposed reclaimed materials for over 32,000 projects throughout the region, and our in-store gallery and workshop space has featured 75 talented local reCreate artists.
But then last year…
Our building was torn down for redevelopment. So, we had to close the store, move, and start over again. Our rebuilding efforts were continually sidelined by construction delays, but we faced the challenge, and reopened with optimism about the future, and began to plan a 10-year anniversary celebration with our community.
And then came COVID-19…
The unanticipated challenge none of us could have foreseen is the COVID- 19 pandemic, nor how quickly it depleted the already limited resources of a small nonprofit. Our shop sales + gallery + workshops stopped, but the rent & bills did not. It was difficult beyond measure to furlough our valued staff, with no end to the pandemic in sight. We also had to cancel our 10-year fundraiser. The event is on hold now and our next ten years are uncertain.
We are still here, but to be honest, we are hanging on by a thread— and we need your support.
Our small-but-mighty staff is back & working very hard to keep our nonprofit afloat, while also keeping our community safe. They continue to save, sort, and sell reclaimed materials under very difficult circumstances, and we need to make sure that we still have jobs to offer at the end of this pandemic.
Please consider donating any amount you can if you want to still see waste diverted from the landfill, or if you enjoy shopping at the store, visiting our gallery, taking our workshops, or generally want to support a local nonprofit making a big impact.
We know this pandemic is hitting everyone hard, but we would appreciate any amount you give to see our organization continue.
As a non-profit organization, all donations are tax deductible, and will support our work to improve the local environment, enhance arts & education, and support an equitable, sustainable economy.
As an advanced "thank you" we will be entering all donors who contribute $10+ into a drawing to win a gift card to The Resource Exchange worth $50.
The Resource Exchange’s mission is to provide inspiration and reclaimed materials for creative and environmentally resourceful making, teaching & living. Our nonprofit shop, gallery, and workshop space promotes creative reuse, recycling, and resource conservation by diverting valuable materials from the waste stream and redirecting them to artists, builders, educators, and the general public.
