UPDATE (April 26)
Over the past week our $40,000 gap has been met! We are grateful to those who have donated and thankful to God for his provisions and answered prayers. This is all, however, contingent on confirming the large contribution that has been 'set-aside' for this project. Again. I'll keep you posted.
The next step will be to await the zoning decision from the City of Oshawa and then, if that is favourable, raising the funds to convert the facility. Any funds that are donated from here on in will be dedicated towards the renovation/construction costs.

UPDATE (April 17)
The Refuge in negotiating a 60 day extension to the conditional offer. We have also been discussing a fairly large contribution that puts us very close to the total. Should this contribution be confirmed, it will put us within $40,000 of our goal.
When you think of the basics for living, typically food, water and shelter come to mind. Finding a safe, affordable place to live is easier said than done in the Durham Region...especially for youth. Many homeless, street, at-risk and struggling youth cannot afford the current market rental prices even for a studio apartment. Current one bedroom apartments are renting for $1400-$1500/month. Bachelor/Studio units are often renting for $1000/month. Rooms in shared accommodations are now renting for $800/month. These rates cannot be afforded by youth who often have to sleep on the street, live in unsafe and unsuitable places or engage in risky behaviours to afford a place to live. However, finding a stable home is often the first step to recovery and a brighter future.
With your help, The Refuge would like to do something about this and bring justice for youth.
The Refuge had put together a proposal to the Federal Government's Rapid Housing Initiative (RHI) program. We have a conditional offer of sale on a vacant school building. Environmental assessments have been done on the site. Architectural drawings have begun. Zoning applications have been submitted to the City of Oshawa...all with the goal of creating a 27 unit facility that would house low- to mid-acquity youth at a price that they can afford (In the range of $400-$500 per month, inclusive). This would give youth in our community the opportunity to find stable housing in a place that affirms their dignity. The facility would also house the programs of The Refuge to provide wrap-around supports for youth in the facility as well as to youth in the community as a whole.
In March, The Refuge learned that our RHI application was denied. However, youth still need a place to live and we believe that God has a plan to meet the need. So we are reaching out to you, to help us meet the needs and provide stable, affordable housing that affirms the dignity of youth and propels them into a hopeful future.
Our conditional offer of sale will expire on the 17th of April (being negotiated to be extended to June 16th) and, while the overall project will cost $6 million (purchase of building, construction costs, etc.), in order to secure the building, The Refuge needs to find $2,374,089 (the agreed upon purchase price).
Would you consider supporting this project? All donations will be receipted for income tax purposes in accordance with the Income Tax Act of Canada. If you make a donation and the goal is not raised, The Refuge will either refund your money or you can choose to designate the funds to a facility fund as, by October 2022, The Refuge will need to find a new home as our lease at our current facility will run out.
