We are asking for your help in building the Rebel Market, Philadelphia's first youth-powered and fresh food-filled corner store.
Zanayja, 10th grader at Academy at Palumbo and Rebel Ventures entrepreneur, asked this question during our crew meeting one week:
“Why can I buy four bags of chips at the corner store for $1, but one smoothie at the supermarket costs $4?”
Why is it so hard for kids to find healthy, affordable, convenient, and tasty food in so many parts of Philadelphia? This is the problem we are trying to solve.
Walk a few blocks in any direction in our city and you will find corner stores and take-outs filled with salty, sugary, and fatty foods. It can be almost impossible for kids to find affordable smoothies, healthy parfaits, fruit salads, or whole-grain snacks.
With your support, we will build a healthy corner store where young people control what's on the menu and gain life skills by running the business. Our primary goal is not profit -- instead, we are focused on providing affordable, nutritious foods to our target customers (kids in Philadelphia) and entrepreneurial education to our high school crew. We will sell fresh sliced ‘grab and go’ produce, parfaits, smoothies, Rebel Crumbles, and other healthy snacks, many priced at $1 or less. On the savory side, our crew will design a simple menu featuring healthy, delicious foods we want to eat like salads, nachos, stir-frys. When determining what to sell, we think about affordability, nutrition, deliciousness, simplicity, seasonality, and mission-alignment. 100% of our products will be healthy deliciousness.
We are Rebel Ventures, a nonprofit food business ran by High School students. (learn more about us Rebel Ventures in Phila. Inquirer).
In 2017 we created Rebel Crumbles, the first youth-developed food product served in a city-wide school meal program. Tens of thousands of students in hundreds of schools across Philadelphia eat whole-grain and fruit-filled Rebel Crumbles for breakfast.
Now that we have youth-powered healthy deliciousness in schools, we want to bring it directly to communities in the form of the Rebel Market.
In the spring of 2019, we received a $42,000 grant from the City of Philadelphia Department of Public Health to hire one full-time Market Planner and two part-time High School Market Planners.
We are happy to introduce our new full-time Market Planner, Edgardo Bones, who has over 2 ½ years of experience working directly with business owners through The Food Trust’s Healthy Corner Store Initiative. We also hired two part-time high school market planners, Lauren Martinez, a junior at Science Leadership Academy @ Beeber, and Eithana Gonzalez, a senior at the Science Leadership Academy.
We plan to open the Rebel Market doors in June 2020. To do so, we need to raise $120,000 to fund renovations and operations of the Market for our first six months.
Our goal is to raise $25,000 by December 31, 2019. Can you help us do that? Everything, from giving a dollar to sharing this campaign with your network, brings us one step closer to opening the Rebel Market doors.
