You make the Churchill community extraordinary! We are stronger together. We are #OneChurchill.
Everything we do from reinventing learning environments to empowering our children to make choices and self-advocate, is done with the success of each and every one of our students in mind. Churchill excels thanks to your hard work, generosity, and dedication to our children.
This year, the staff and faculty of the Elementary, Middle, and High Schools are each raising funds for specific programs that each work to meet the unique needs of our children and provide them with opportunities that are critical to their cognitive and social development. Check them out!
Our Elementary School Team is fundraising for flexible furniture. Churchill’s focus on each child’s unique needs is at the heart of our flexible seating initiative. When we think of a traditional classroom, we tend to think of students sitting in identical chairs and desks that are arranged in neat rows. For children with certain learning differences, it can take so much concentration and focus to sit in this way, that they are unable to concentrate on the lesson. Here at Churchill, classrooms are being outfitted with different types of furniture options like standing desks, stools, beanbag chairs, and balance ball chairs. Starting in elementary school, students have an opportunity to try out the different furniture options. They are encouraged to feel how each option impacts their level of concentration. As they get older and move up in the elementary school, they are given the freedom to choose their seating based on what they need that day. This process teaches children to connect with how they are feeling inside, choose which option would be most useful to them that day, and express their choice. This process has far-reaching implications that go beyond the classroom. This is the process of empowerment, self-awareness, and self-advocacy. And it clears the way for our children, who are incredibly bright and intelligent, to focus on what matters and excel academically.
Our Middle School Team is fundraising for our Prepare Inc. Situational Awareness and Violence Prevention Program. Using age-appropriate materials and an evidence-based methodology, Prepare’s program teaches our children the skills needed to set limits in situations that make them uncomfortable or are potentially dangers. The program includes an exploration of how they feel about themselves (self-esteem, self-efficacy, and confidence), how they relate to themselves, and how they trust their instincts. It teaches our children situational awareness, how to make safer choices about how to behave, and how to advocate for themselves and set boundaries, particularly when they are feeling unsafe. Providing children with this type of program lowers anxiety and gives them a sense of agency and self-reliance. It provides them with better communication skills, the ability to express difficult thoughts and feelings and provides a foundation for personal safety.
Our High School Team is fundraising for our Student Cultural Learning Intitiative. This initiative provides scholarships that allow our students the opportunity to participate in programs that complement their academic achievements, develop their sense of social consciousness, expose them to potential career paths, and provide them with a competitive edge in the college admissions process. An example of such a program is the International Service Project, happening for the first time this year here at Churchill. As a part of this program, students will travel to the Dominican Republic where they will work alongside residents on a project designed to revitalize a community as part of the village’s local development and sustainability plans. Through programs such as this, children learn about other cultures and perspectives first hand. They gain a cultural awareness, a global understanding of international issues, and they learn the concept of sustainable development.
