In partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of the Peninsula, the #OLM@TheBay Experience will take place from August 16-19, 2018 in Redwood City, California.
#OLM@TheBay Overview:
The #OurDreamsMatter Summit Trip will mark the 8th out of area teen summit event led by teens from the #OurLivesMatter Teen Campaign. The campaign is an initiative of the FBRNation Boys & Girls Club located in SE Washington DC. 3 1/2 years old, the Campaign’s mission is to “promote and safeguard the identity, rights and pride of teens of color.” The out of area summits began in October, 2015, as word spread throughout the Boys & Girls Club Movement about the work of the DC teens. The summit events are held at or in partnership with local Boys & Girls Clubs in the state of visitation. Past cities include Jersey City NJ, Baltimore MD, Richmond VA, Lawrence NJ, Dallas TX, Chicago IL and Birmingham AL. In each city, teens from DC have led and partnered with teens in the cot visited to plan and execute the summit. Topics have ranged from teen violence to educational advocacy to civic engagement. Educational and social opportunities round our each trip’s itinerary. The most recent summit was held at the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL during the Summer of 2017. 10 teens (accompanied by 2 staff and 1 alum) were able to sit in and walk in some of the exact same places as civil rights leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., such as 16th Street Church and Kelly Ingram Park.
The upcoming #OurDreamsMatter Summit Experience will bring together Black and Latino youth at a time where our country’s discourse demands for this gathering. Issues will include teen empowerment, mental wellness, civic engagement and community development. The Experience will also allow teens to take advantage of the host Club’s location near Silicon Valley. Visits will include Facebook, LinkedIn and 23AndMe. These experiences will focus on diversity in tech, career planning and personal branding and communication within a global culture and how social media empowers the Teen voice.
Your suppprt will ensure that this year’s delegation of 16 (10 teens, 4 staff, 1 alum and 1 partner/volunteer) will make this trip an impactful experience and set the stage for our upcoming school year programming and the continued work of the #OurLivesMatter Teen Campaign. Thank you in advance.
