Something special happened tonight. A coincidence. I went to visit my Mom in Savin Hill but she was way too exhausted from her 91st birthday party yesterday to get out of bed. She opened her eyes a bit and cracked a smile and I told her I’d be back tomorrow. Then on my drive home to the Cape I called my friend Carmen, a fellow art teacher. I asked how her job was going. She said many of the children don’t have paper at home let alone art materials which made teaching over Zoom very disheartening. She was contemplating ways to make watercolor sets by thinning out old paints...but how to make 100 sets? I asked her where she teaches? At Mission Grammar School. Yes, that Mission Grammar where my mom went 80 years ago! Immediately I knew what was going to happen. I said, Carmen, by Friday this week you will have $1000 to buy a brand new watercolor set for every child. And there will be a little money left over for a small set of oil pastels and some paper. This will be the first annual Mission Grammar School Art Supply Fund in honor of Madelyn Finn Carney and her brother William Finn a fellow Mission Grammar School and Mass College of Art alum. When I’m back in Savin Hill tomorrow hopefully my Mom will be more awake to hear about this fundraiser we’re starting. Happy 91st Birthday Madelyn Carney!!! Here’s to your gorgeous watercolor paintings, your years of teaching, and your love of art. I Love you!! Liz, aka Baby Elisabeth as Uncle bill would say.
