The Isabel O’Neil Studio Workshop, named for its founder, opened in 1955 in New York City. Isabel O’Neil spent her life researching painting techniques and attempting to duplicate them using twentieth century materials. The Studio Workshop remains committed to producing and teaching finishes such as tortoise, marble, malachite, coral, gilding, lapis, ancient Asian designs and many others.
Under the direction of Isabel O’Neil-trained teachers, The Studio Workshop continues as a laboratory investigating new materials and inventing new finishes. Using twenty-first century tools, artisans continue the age-old techniques while creating heirlooms of the future. The school is structured as a guild with the students taking courses and if they wish, gradually achieving the rank of journeyman and master. Students often volunteer to become teachers, sharing their knowledge with new students. This system has guaranteed the existence of the Studio Workshop as well as the continued excellence of its product for the past SIXTY-FIVE years. This year we initiated a program for young people from a local Boy’s and Girl’s Club. We hope to expand this opportunity to more students who may not be able to afford the classes.
Like many schools and businesses in New York City, the Studio has been under extreme stress due to the absence of tuition, its only source of income. Overhead and staff still must be paid. Our target of $50,000. will cover the school’s needs through January of 2021.
If this long lasting and highly respected institution should close it would be a terrible blow to the Decorative Arts community.
