I'm so excited and honored to be running in the NYC Marathon on November 4th on behalf of the Herren Project! The mission of The Herren Project is to provide assistance in taking the first steps toward recovery and a life of sobriety, educational programs and resources to increase awareness on the signs of addiction and bring hope for a better tomorrow.
As many of you know, I lost my dad ten years ago while he was riding his bicycle and was hit and killed by a drug impaired driver. It still feels like it happened yesterday. My dad was the best and loved by so many. He was hilarious, athletic, intelligent and someone everyone wanted to be around. He didn’t get to see my high school graduation or my graduation from Syracuse University. He doesn’t get to be at holidays. I don’t have a dad to give a Father’s Day card to. He won’t be able to walk me down the aisle when I get married or be a grandfather to my babies one day. This is all because of the act of someone getting behind the wheel while on drugs.
This life altering event has shaped me into the woman I am today. While losing my dad was completely out of my control, there are many things that are in my control. Continuing to share my story is one of them and something I will never stop doing. This complex brain disorder is something that is extremely hard to wrap your head around, but something I have grown to learn about over the years. It is my mission to continue to raise money, awareness and to give back to the community whenever I have the opportunity to do so.
All the preparation, countless miles and hard work going into training for this marathon are in memory of my dad. It is also for the people in my life that I love who have been impacted by the struggle of addition. It is heartbreaking to see people lose themselves in this disease and The Herren Project makes sure no one has to struggle alone.
Training for a marathon has been my hardest athletic adventure to date, but the most exciting and rewarding. I’m lucky to be running alongside my best friend which will make all 26.2 miles that much more fun!
I’m so grateful that I was picked to be a member of this incredible team. Thank you to everyone who has loved me and supported me especially over the last ten years. I hope you will consider donating to this amazing cause. Every bit counts!
