Hi I'm Melissa O'Neil. I am a Military Spouse, Proud Mom of two young adults, a Nurse, a Veteran and a two-time Breast Cancer Survivor. I have been an athlete all my life and it was sports that changed and saved my life. I was first diagnosed in 1997 at a young age of 30. I had a mastectomy with reconstruction. We were told they got it all, but in 2002, I found a lump in my armpit. My spouse had just returned from a deployment in Afghanistan and we were 4 days shy of celebrating 5 years remission when we were told it was back. I had 30/31 lymph nodes that were cancerous. During this 2nd journey I received chemo, radiation and was told I had a 30% chance of survival; that was almost 15 years ago! I celebrated 20 years total survivorship on July 3, 2017. This milestone has become possible for me because of research. That is why I continue to raise funds for The Donna Foundation. The Donna Foundation is a non-private organization producing the only marathon in the U.S. dedicated to breast cancer research, awareness and care.. Its mission is to passionately raise funds for ground breaking breast cancer research and women living with breast cancer. Since its launch in 2003, The DONNA Foundation has raised more than $5 million towards its vision to finish breast cancer. The DONNA Foundation provides financial assistance for the critical needs of women and men living with breast cancer. To date, The DONNA Foundation has served more than 10,000 families. The DONNA Foundation also helped to develop and maintain the Mayo Clinic Breast Cancer Translational Genomics Program. Ongoing funding from the foundation make it possible for the laboratory team not only to conduct state of the art breast cancer research, including the widely publicized Triple Negative Breast Cancer Vaccine Trials, but also provide genomics support for studies in all cancers. Please donate and help me to FINISH BREAST CANCER!! THANK YOU!!!
