Organized by family and friends of David Murray, The David Lindley Murray Scholarship Award will be presented to a student currently enrolled in the Chesapeake Learning Center at West Nottingham Academy that is rising to 10th, 11th, or 12th grade. The recipient will be one that demonstrates the work ethic, character, and commitment to the WNA community that was so important in David’s life while a student at WNA and will live on in his legacy.
Though Grade Point Average (GPA) may be a factor incidentally, grades were not a determining factor in the successes in David’s life, nor shall they be the deciding factor when considering the granting of this award. Instead, a choice will be made based on the values that David most upheld during his time at WNA. The honoree will demonstrate a relentless work ethic, character in their interpersonal relationships, and commitment to representing school activities such as athletics or student leadership programs.
Work Ethic: David embodied the motto “Nihil sine Labore”. He was the first to class or practice and was the last to leave. He struggled mightily, and openly, with his academic difficulties and was always brave enough to face those challenges with an equal measurement of self-reliance and the personal awareness to know when to ask for support. David viewed his academic challenges as an opportunity to show how high and hard he could climb rather than excuse them as insurmountable obstacles. This is the legacy that The David Murray Annual Scholarship will honor.
Interpersonal Skills: David was acutely aware of, and sensitive to, the emotions of others. He was naturally empathetic - it was the defining characteristic of his personality. A handshake or a hug, a smile or an inviting gesture to join the dance floor, David made sure that all those around him were “seen” and that everyone felt valued. This was particularly true in his efforts to help other students in the CLC Program, whether they were new to the school or not. He strove to have all classmates felt welcome, empowered, and self-assured. This was also the teammate that David was to his fellows. The first hand to help someone off of the ground was always David’s. This is the legacy that The David Murray Annual Scholarship will honor.
Commitment to WNA and Visible Leadership: David was the school’s most dedicated civil servant, winning the Community Service Award multiple times. He was an active member of the Student Council, was a three-sport Varsity athlete from the day he stepped on campus, and he was recognized by local media on many occasions for his formidable abilities as an athlete, but also, and sometimes much more telling of his character, as a gentlemanly leader. David viewed leadership as an opportunity to serve others. He would go back to run extra with a lagging teammate, or start the positive thread in a conversation for a struggling friend. For David, leadership was not best demonstrated by standing out as an individual but was rather about how well one helped to create a sense of unity and family around them. This is the legacy that The David Murray Annual Scholarship will honor.
The Scholarship: The scholarship will cover the costs of a full year’s participation in the Chesapeake Learning Center. Each year, a new recipient will be announced. A recipient can be named more than one time during their attendance at West Nottingham if they meet the criteria for nomination and are approved as a nominee.
