The Church of the Epiphany is a diverse Episcopal church in the heart of downtown Washington, D.C. For 175 years, we have been called to build an inclusive and diverse community, serve people in need, and celebrate the arts. We are an open and affirming Christian community that is passionate about hospitality and justice.
For years, Epiphany has operated homeless services such as The Welcome Table and Street Church - programs that provide meals, supplies, opportunities for creativity, and ministry to the downtown poor. Our doors are also open from 10AM-3PM from Monday to Friday to provide respite from the elements for those who are not sheltered. Like many churches, we have operated within a paradigm of charity; that it is our duty, as people of God, to serve those who are perceived as “less fortunate” and “underprivileged”. Meals, extra socks and a few hours of shelter are necessary for those surviving day-to-day, but they do little to combat the root causes of widespread poverty. “We believe that it is our duty to shift the charity paradigm toward one of agency and justice; Epiphany seeks to be an agent of systemic transformation in the District of Columbia,” says The Reverend Glenna Huber, head rector of Epiphany.
The Epiphany Power Hour addresses those systemic roots. From 12:10-1:00 PM every Thursday, we offer free social justice education (and free lunch!) to our community, which often includes homeless or formerly homeless individuals. Epiphany has featured a number of community leaders, from religious institutions to nonprofits to community organizers. Our goal is to empower our attendees to become change agents in the world.
Our tireless work for justice also encompasses other community programs: The Welcome Table, which provides a hot breakfast to 200+ homeless indiviudals on Sunday mornings, Street Church, which provides ministry and lunch to folks on Tuesdays, our free Tuesday Concert Series, which features artists from around the world, and our weekly church services. Our building serves as a home to Street Sense Media, a paper written and sold by homeless vendors, Youth Service Opportunities Project, which brings youth from around the country to do service projects in D.C., and as a prayer space to the All Dulles Area Muslim Society. Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous, and Al-Anon also have weekly meetings here. All the while, we have building maintenance and repairs to be done.
