My name is Kim Pellizzi, and my mom, Velma was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2004. I found out about CancerCare's 2nd Annual Lung Cancer Walk 10 days before the event. My husband Jimmy and my brother Frankie knew how important this walk was and raised $1,500.00 for me. Walking in honor of my mom that year was a very fulfilling experience. Now it saddens me to say, we walk in memory of her. We do this every year. In October, my Lung Cancer Walk team has a bowling event, "Strike Out Cancer" and because of our many friends and family we have over 200 people attend and for the last twelve years, we have raised over $200,000. My family & friends make it a little easier to deal with the loss of my mother, and it gives me great satisfaction that we are doing this for her. My mom was a very strong person and my best friend. Cancercare has also helped me every step of the way. It's all about giving and getting support-this makes every day without your loved one a little easier. My mom loved butterflies, and as fate would have it, our team name is "The Butterflies". It symbolizes that life never ends-it merely changes form. Now whenever I see a butterfly, I believe my mom is telling me everything will be alright.
On Sunday, November 3, 2019, our team will join hundreds of other members of the Long Island community at the CancerCare 17th Annual Lung Cancer Walk for Hope. We will come together with a unified goal to raise funds and increase awareness about lung cancer and CancerCare's National Lung Cancer Program. As we walk, we will celebrate survivors and remember loved ones.
