In preparation for my Ironman and to raise money for the Brave House, Brooklyn-based nonprofit serving young immigrant girls seeking asylum for gender-based violence, I'm biking 100 laps of the Brooklyn Bridge on Sunday, July 21st!
It's hard to believe that in just 30 days I'll be in Mont Tremblant, Canada completing my 1st Ironman side-by-stride™ with one of my best friends, and Brave House founder, Lauren Blodgett.
And yes, we know it will be 100 degrees, but these girls deserve all the support we can offer them and I'm ready to rise to the challenge tomorrow!
So please, please sponsor a lap ($30), two, or whatever you can give!
It's still just the very beginning for the Brave House and we need all the support we can get to get up and Running!
FIRST, WHAT IS AN IRONMAN?
(don't worry, everyone asks!)
Ironman is a 140.6 miles Triathlon composed of a 2.4 miles swim, a 112 mile bike, and a 26.2 mile run.
WHY I'M DOING IT.
You may be thinking that I must be crazy...
While you're probably not wrong, I'm Lit Up both emotionally and physically to support the Brave House, an amazing nonprofit for immigrant girls seeking asylum in Brooklyn founded by close friend and fellow Iron(wo)man, Lauren Blodgett.
It seems like every morning there's another story about our government actively starving families arriving at our border of basic human rights and services, treating them as less-than-human. All this just because they were born on the wrong side of a magical line in the sand.
3 months ago I invited many of my closest friends and family to a social benefit concert to celebrate my 30th birthday. To say it was magical would be a Massive understatement!
That night made me realize that the Brave House was here to stay in my life; that this was just the beginning! I realized I’d been searching for something bigger than myself; something that aligned with my values and where my time, creativity, skills, and energy would make a real, visible impact.
These girls weren't blessed with the family, community, nor circumstance that afforded me every opportunity to pick and chose the life that I wanted for myself, to make life, education, and career decisions knowing that if I were to misstep and fall, I had a strong safety net there to catch me and pick me up.
While the founder is one of the most impressive and resourceful people I know, she simply cannot do it on her own. What she needs right now is a legal advocate ($30K annually) to help her manage a growing community of volunteers, write grant applications, and assist with myriad other responsibilities.
Please sponsor me by donating $30 (or more!) and together let's get the Brave House up and RUNNING!
