Every day, the Northern Manhattan Coalition for Immigrant Rights opens its doors to some of the bravest people you will ever meet. They all have distinct stories, some harder than others with harrowing tales of crossing deserts in darkness or tumultuous seas in yolas to be here. Others are “luckier” to be reunited with their families under more auspicious circumstances. But every single one of them left places they know, family they love and countries they feel connected to, to arrive in an unfamiliar place that especially recently, has become more and more unwelcoming by the minute.
Every day, all over the country, immigrants are detained; die in ICE custody; have their human rights violated; and families are torn apart all while you and I eat breakfast, go to work, and enjoy our freedom.
What we do:
At NMCIR we lead and coordinate policy campaigns to push policies that expand justice for immigrants. We organize and participate in marches, rallies and protests to raise awareness and demand justice for our community. When our people end up in detention, we raise funds to post bond and to help families cope with the loss of income that can happen when a breadwinner is detained. We go where we’re needed.
What we’ve done in 2018:
We co-organized the first of its kind in NYC, The People’s Court and put ICE on Trial to elevate stories of grievous misconduct at the hands of ICE and CBP that have resulted in illness, trauma and even death of detainees--crimes committed with impunity and largely underreported by the media. When the Neo-Nazis marched through our community in August we marched back so that the immigrants in Upper Manhattan would know, they were not alone. We raised over $12,000 to post bond for a young man who had been detained twice as he sought to flee gang violence in his home country. When reports of families being separated at the border reached critical levels, we travelled to the border at Tornillo, TX despite this being far out of our usual stomping grounds to bear witness and create ties with advocacy groups in TX to expand and strengthen the movement.
Do you have a few dollars to spare and a few minutes to spread the word about our work and campaign? A $50 $100, $250 or whatever you can give will help us get to our goal.
