The Oakleigh Veterans Park is a Memorial dedicated to the honor of all American military and civilian support personnel who served the United States in the wars in the Middle East and associated regions. Special recognition for regional Gold Star moms and dads is a prominent part of this Memorial.
This Memorial is a place of contemplation and respect for the sacrifice of so many. It is now under construction in Albemarle County, Virginia, just outside the municipal limits of Charlottesville, Virginia.
The Memorial was first conceived in 2015 as a landscaped sanctuary which includes a boulder fountain, a bronze sculpture, and 50 foot flag pole from which the American and POW/MIA flags will proudly fly. The Park will sit adjacent to a "Dawn to Dusk" playground and outdoor exercise venue where youngsters and older Americans can gather to become acquainted, work out, or simply enjoy time around the fire pit. This park is an integral part of the Memorial.
The centerpiece of the Memorial is a brick "Wall of Honor", an arched structure that anchors the Memorial plaza. In the center of the arch, a bronze Fallen Soldier sculpture will be mounted thanks to the generosity of Clif Coleman and Coleman Adams Construction in Forest, Virginia. This sculpture is a haunting reminder of the bravery and sacrifice of Americans killed in action.
On either side of the Wall of Honor arch, bronze plaques are planned to acknowledge major contributers, whether individuals or companies. A minimum contribution of $3500 is requested to reserve a place on the Wall of Honor. There are special spots on the arch to honor Americans killed in combat zones, regardless of the war during which they were killed.
Thanks to the generosity and creativity of many individuals and businesses in our region, the Park's construction began in the fall of 2019. The goal for completion is the spring of 2021. However, final funds to complete the project are needed. In a time when civility, kindness and connection are all too scarce, the Veteran's Park is a physical space to bring us together and pay tribute to our loved ones.
Thus far, we have received cash and in-kind contributions totalling more than $34,000 from multiple supporters including:
Coleman Adams Construction
Allied Concrete / Deb Brown
Wagner Construction Company
Insignia Development Services, Inc.
The developers of Oakleigh, where this memorial is located, will donate the land to the Memorial.
We invite your support and we invite you to share our call with your family and friends. Once complete, we will hold a dedication ceremony for the Memorial and for our donors and guests of honor.
Thank you for your support.
The Veterans Park is a 501(c)(3) organization and all donations are tax-exempt. The Memorial is entirely funded through the gifts of Supporters.
PHASE II - Dawn to Dusk Venue
An integral part of this project, which will begin construction in 2021, is a venue adjacent to the Memorial which is designed as a place where youngsters and older folks can meet and become acquanited, with all that entails. Featured in this space is age-appropriate exercise equipment for the younger visitors and various exercise stations around one side of the space with equipment designed specifically for seniors.
The centerpiece is a propane-fired fire pit with seating for all to share.
There is a graphic in the photo section above that shows the layout of the Dawn to Dusk section.
