In Ukraine, parents of children with special needs are encouraged to hand their children over to state care. They are told their children are a burden on society. Children are sent to institutions where they are subjected to abuse and neglect. There is minimal support available to parents who fight to keep their children with them. Maya's Hope wants to help relieve some of the burden on these amazing parents and assist in keeping children with their families, where they belong.
Nastya's parents are visually impaired, so when her mother became pregnant the doctors demanded she have an abortion. They told them their child would be worthless and a burden. But they refused and Nastya was born to parents who love her immensely.
Nastya is now 11 and loves school and is a very smart girl! She is visually impaired and has Type 1 Diabetes. She needs to check her blood sugar levels several times a day, but the strips she needs to use are very expensive. Social services offered to send Nastya to an orphanage, which will take on all the obligations to provide and treat her. But of course, Nastya loves her parents, and they her. She was terrified of the idea and vigorously refused. Nastya wants to live at home and go to school.
