The Tenney Nursery and Parent Center (Tenney Nursery, or TNPC) is a not-for-profit parent and community-centered cooperative preschool and parent resource that has operated in Madison's Tenney-Lapham neighborhood since 1979. For over forty years, Madison kids have grown and learned through TNPC's play-based curriculum and nurturing community. We want to keep the Tenney Nursery open and accessible for generations to come for parents and kids right here on Madison's East Side.
Today, the COVID-19 pandemic has created unprecedented difficulties for early childcare centers everywhere. Analysis by the Center for American Progress indicates that up to 50% of early childcare centers in the US are at risk of permanent closure due to disruptions created by the COVID-19 pandemic. Non-profit preschools stay open on razor thin margins even under the best circumstances, and therefore the closures and enrollment reductions they've experienced this year have put many on the brink. Tenney Nursery is not immune to these pressures.
Since the onset of the pandemic in Wisconsin in March 2020, Tenney Nursery has faced many challenges. We had to close for several months, and when able to reopen it was, for safety, with dramatically lower enrollment than typical. TNPC's volunteer parent board, teachers, and families rallied to support the school through grantwriting and donations. These efforts helped out in the short term, but as the COVID-19 pandemic has dragged on, we now face a much larger budget shortfall that places the ongoing operation of Tenney Nursery at risk. For 41 years, Tenney Nursery has been a great place for kids to learn and for teachers to work. Through scholarships and budgeting to keep tuition within reach, TNPC has been a consciencious institution committed to making quality childcare available to a wider variety of our neighbors than big for-profit daycares. But the unprecedented challenges of COVID-19 may spell the end of Tenney Nursery in our neighborhood and in our kid's lives.
That's why we are turning to our neighbors and friends for help. Your donations can help us overcome the deficit created by COVID-19. Under normal conditions, TNPC operates sustainably and within budget. We've been a reliable resource for familiies in Madison for 41 years, and if COVID-19 hadn't thrown everything into disorder, it's certain we would have been on track for another 41. Your donations will help us fill the hole in our budget created by COVID-19, continue to provide excellent childcare in Madison's Tenney-Lapham neighorhood, and plan for a sustainable future once COVID-19 is controlled or defeated.
Your donations directly aid a proven and beloved nursery school answer the unprecedented challenges of this pandemic. Please help the Tenney Nursery and Parent Center remain open for the next generation of kids and families growing and learning in Madison. Thank you!
