Dear friends and family: I will run a 10k next weekend, and I am asking you to consider donating even a small amount, $10, to a very worthy cause: Planned Parenthood. A dollar per kilometer. You can of course contribute more, but $10 would be just great, too.
Why do this now? Why should you donate and why am I asking?
For much of my career I have worked on changing the status quo in government and business, to bolster integrity and support social justice. It has been a great privilege to work on these issues. For many years, however, my job did not allow me to be "party political" or partisan to various causes, to avoid upsetting my professional position. This felt untenable at times, but I dealt with it.
I changed jobs earlier this year, and now I can connect the dots between my professional work and the personal beliefs that led me to work in my field. Like so many, I am deeply worried about where US politics is heading just now. I am also concerned about what the current political choices will mean for the rights of women: for women's equality, dignity and choice. The Senate's decision to confirm Brett Kavanaugh's appointment to the Supreme Court is just part of this, albeit a big part in the past week. We can not allow a woman's right to choose, to participate, to be treated fairly, to be set back decades.
Next weekend I will run http://berlin-laeuft.de/the-bridgestone-great-10k/en/homepage-2/ in Berlin. I would like to use the occasion of the race to support women's rights -- by crowdsourcing donations to Planned Parenthood. Can you give? Right now, after reading this? It's a great cause and we are at a critical time. As I run this race, any support will give me hope and encouragement. Thank you!
