Teeing Off Against DC: The Huiras Family Memorial Golf Tournament, which will take place August 17, honors the Huiras men who died as a result of having a rare, genetic condition known as Dyskeratosis Congenita. Twin brothers Leonard and Linus were born in 1948 and raised near Sleepy Eye, Minn., The Huiras twins and their families were profoundly impacted by the disease. Although the illness caused severe problems in the men, including aplastic anemia and degenerative hips, they maintained their ability to golf. Both Leonard and Linus went on to pass the illness to their children. Leonard's youngest Joe Huiras battled complications, including aplastic anemia and cancer, from the diease for several years before he lost his battle in December 2017. Like his father, Joe found happiness while playing golf.
The event will raise money that benefits families in the DCO community.
