In October of 2018, I got a call from my aunt that my Mom was in the hospital: she had had a stroke. She was on Martha's Vineyard, and this was no small thing. Due to the blood thinners that my Mom is on for her heart, this would be tricky if she wasn't treated quickly. My sister and I were told to think about what my Mom would want. The adults in my life were turning to me for answers and suddenly this thing I had never heard of, never considered seriously - a stroke - was a major factor in my life.
My Mom was airlifted to MGH. At the time, I had no idea what a stroke was or what laid ahead for our family. What I've come to understand, is that without her friend's awareness of the symptoms of a stroke, their fast action, and the compassionate care that my Mom received, our outlook today would be very different.
I'm fundraising with Tedy's Team because this team proves that recovery is possible after a stroke- that you can play professional football or, in my Mom's case, continue going to rock concerts, travel to Ireland, or run a half marathon. This kind of recovery becomes possible for more people with increased awareness of stroke symptoms, and a greater understanding of treatment and recovery.
That's what I aim to help do while fundraising with Tedy's Team, and THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for joining me. #NFS!!! <3 Emily
And remember, BE FAST, which stands for:
Speech Difficulties - and if you notice any of those warning signs, it's...
TIME TO CALL 9-1-1.
The mission of Tedy's Team is to raise awareness for stroke and heart disease while supporting survivors on their journey, giving them a means for a comeback!
Tedy's Team was originally founded in 2005, when Tedy Bruschi, former linebacker for the New England Patriots suffered a stroke shortly after winning his 3rd Super Bowl and just days after returning from his first Pro Bowl.
We are honored to be part of the Offical Charity Program of the Boston Marathon for 14 years. The Boston Athletic Association has allowed us to use the Boston Marathon to elevate the awarenss of the warning signs of stroke.
