Give our students computers to make learning at home possible
I teach music at an urban high poverty elementary school which houses close to 700 students ages 3 to 12. Our students are bright, inquisitive, and LOVE school! Our school's mascot is Bobcat, and they pledge every morning that they come to school to learn, and they will learn, so they will be college and career ready because that's the Bobcat way.
We have many students in our school whose families recently immigrated from all around the world - Africa, Asia, South America, and Far and the Middle East - and they are eager to learn and to help each other learn even more every day!
In our current situation inflicted by COVID19, our students are not able to come to school, so they are learning from home. Many of them simply do not have the means to practice distance learning due to the lack of internet-connected devices at their homes.
Our school is a Title I elementary school in a high poverty area of Upstate New York. Our students are disadvantaged in many ways, and the disparity of their resources and those of their suburban peers is glaringly obvious now during COVID-19 emergency quarantine. Our students simply can not keep up without access to technology at home. Fortunately, several local telecoms are offering free internet services during the quarantine, but we are lacking the technology to provide our students with basic educational opportunities. This gift of computers/tablets will make a tremendous difference in their lives and education, and not just now, but also going forward.
