I'm running the Boston Marathon on behalf of the American Red Cross! My husband, Phil (who ran a Boston qualifying time in a blistering 3:01!) will run by my side in my first marathon after a 2-year "I'm having a baby" hiatus!
Week after week as a New York Road Runners race announcer, I encouraged runners to donate to the American Red Cross and their hurricane relief efforts as part of my official announcements. Now, I'm taking to the pavement myself.
Because I know that the American Red Cross does so much more than hurricane relief. In Massachusetts alone, the Red Cross responds to hundreds of fires a year, runs the largest food pantry in New England, and staffs the Boston Marathon's medical tents and course disruption centers with 600 medical and support volunteers, among other services. The American Red Cross provides disaster relief, health and safety training, lifesaving blood programs, food assistance, and services to the armed forces in communities all over the U.S. and abroad.
As a teenager, I took multiple Red Cross CPR and water safety courses as a swim instructor. My daughter's baby sitter is Red Cross certified in pediatric CPR and first aid. Growing up in Illinois, I remember one year that Mississippi River flooding devastated much of the Midwest. My mom had my sister and I clean out our house and drive everything to a Red Cross donation site. Now, I'm really excited to give back and run with Team Red Cross.
Please donate whatever you can. No amount is too small (or too big)! When a family's home burns down, the Red Cross is there. When a hurricane hits, the Red Cross is there. When rivers flood, the Red Cross is there. Will you be there for people in their greatest time of need?
From the American Red Cross of Massachusetts:
On April 16, 2018, more than 60 Team Red Cross members will run the historic 26.2 miles from Hopkinton to Boston in support of the American Red Cross mission.
With every mile run and every dollar raised, Team Red Cross runners help to save and transform the lives of people in their greatest time of need. Together, we are the American Red Cross and together, we will finish the race Boston Strong!
The American Red Cross exists to provide compassionate care to those in need. Our network of generous donors, volunteers, and employees share a mission of preventing and relieving suffering here at home and around the world through five key service areas: Disaster Services, Service to the Armed Forces, Biomedical Services, Health and Safety Services, and International Services.
The American Red Cross of Massachusetts serves 351 cities and towns across the Commonwealth with a population of over 6.6 million people. Since 2012, Team Red Cross runners have raised more than one million dollars in support of Red Cross programs and services in Massachusetts and beyond.
