I have a rare disease that is terminal in some cases and has no known cure. I am riding for my life (and the lives of fellow PH patients) to fundraise for a cure. Pulmonary Hypertension is a rare, progressive disease that causes high blood pressure in the lungs. As the pressure in the lungs increases, the heart has to work harder to pump blood into the lungs. This eventually leads to heart failure.
Early diagnosis makes a huge difference for people. By God's grace, I was diagnosed early and put on a treatment that has been tremendously effective for me.
I started riding my bike to fight PH soon after diagnosis. At the time, I had to keep my heart rate at 115bpm or below so as not to harm my heart. As time went on, I was able to increase my heart rate and could ride longer and faster.
I met the founding members of Team PHenomenal Hope in 2012 and was inspired to use my riding to raise awareness and funding for research to fight PH. I joined Team PH in 2014!
As of January 2019, there are 100 Team PH athletes from all over the US, Germany, Brazil, Mexico, and South Africa, 60 of them hailing from the US. We also have athletes racing for Team PH in Ireland, Belgium, Australia, and the UK. These athletes are riding, running, swimming, skiing and mountain climbing to make a positive difference in the lives of PH patients.
I am so excited and so incredibly thankful to be able to be a part of this team, working together to beat pulmonary hypertension!
