Aging is a time for excitement and fulfillment
The world is now faced with a rapidly aging society. Ageism is abused, discriminated, avoided and stereotyped in the society (William & Julian, 2008). We are presently living in a society in which the population is growing tremendously, especially individuals over the age of 65. Age is one among many causes of social problems. This is because the elderly and the extremely young are more vulnerable than any other age groups in society. Problems which are related to the elderly include financial instability, poverty, victimization, isolation, dependency, lack of access to appropriate health care and inadequate housing.
Aging brings with it drastic health issues which increase spending on medical expenses and nursing homes. This problem increases daily; this is so because the elderly face exceptionally high medical bills with decreasing or low incomes. Running, one of the exercise programs, is to keep the elderly healthy and able to remain independent as long as they are possibly able.
MY AMAZING STORY
Three weeks before the Chicago Marathon, I had an injury from 10K run arranged for fund raising for Breast Cancer. My ankle was swollen from a torn ligament. I could barely walk and could hardly put weight on my left foot. The Doctor wasn’t able to give me any hope once she learned about the challenge that I was about to face in 3 weeks. My hard work training and crazy dream was gone. However, the show must go on. I decided to go to see another physical therapist to get a second opinion. Apart from ultrasound and electrical treatment, she encouraged me not give up. I ran in the pool and biked to maintain my heart rate for a week. In the next week, I walked for 1 hour and then in the third week I jogged 10 km to keep my muscles. Before I left for Chicago, the doctor taught me a technique on how to use athletic tape to keep my ankle strong on the big day. She said, with the tape, I could run about 20 km but after that it would be a miracle if I was able to complete 42K without any ankle pain. On the big day, the ankle pains came at 17 km but I finally finished 42 km within 5:59:47. The Impossible is possible!!!
RUN WITH CHARITY TEAM
Boston Marathon is the world’s oldest annual marathon. It is one of the six World Marathon Majors. I started my first marathon at age 57 which is actually very late for runners. However, I perceived that it was a good time to add a challenge to my life. My inspiration is to finish six Marathon World majors by the time I turn 60 years old. I have completed four Marathon World majors and will do the New York Marathon on November 3 this year. It is a dream that all runners no matter what their age to achieve and complete all the majors. For me, it will be a major achievement in my life. It will also prove that people at any age can overcome the limits.
I learned about HOPe organization from my runners group who I met at Public Park two years ago. We become good friends even though we are different ages and gender but share the same running passion to achieve six Marathon World majors. My philosophy in life is “action will happen if two things are present i.e. Opportunity and Readiness”. Although I have completed 4 marathon majors, at my age, I have still not been able to complete a marathon at the qualifying time of 4:20 hrs. Which is required to enter the Boston Marathon. I am physically ready and have trained enough but I will not finish 6 majors without an opportunity from HOPe nonprofit organizations. My wish is to finish six Marathon World majors by the time I turn 60 years old. It is a good opportunity for me to be part in supporting HOPe mission whilst also making my wish come true.
I wish to return benefits of what I have earned from running back to society in any forms. There are several benefits of running happening to me, such as having a healthier life, gaining more professional integrity, improving medical fitness, etc. It allows me to develop skills which are considered beneficial throughout my life i.e. developing self-esteem, social skills, accept defeat at times, maintain discipline, no I in team. Those benefits were slowly nurtured and blended in my DNA. Luckily, I have opportunity to play sports and keep me healthy. I am very happy and committed to be part of your success of raising funds to achieve HOPe mission.
From a few years ago, I have been actively promoting people around me to be aware of good health, which can be gained from regular exercise. I created a campaign among my network i.e.staff and friends to participate in many challenges i.e. 90 Days Fit Fun Firm, 100 Days Virtual Run. The network that I have built has about 100 people who believe in my sincere wish to see them in good health. Using a Chat Line, I have created a simple way of by which they can report the results of their daily exercise by entering the number of hours and kilometers. People participated not only for the trophy or T-shirt I provided, but they also have fun and have noticed the changes in their bodies, which have become more lean and stronger.
