Our Story
My third pregnancy was what you would consider “picture perfect,” having no major complications or illnesses. Camden was born at 39 weeks via a schedule C-section weighing exactly 7lbs. He was born with a petechia rash covering his entire body, which most doctors just brushed off. Our amazing pediatrician was very concerned and unsure of the cause. 24 hours later we were told that he failed his newborn hearing screening, which then led his doctor to do a CMV test. This was our third child, but my husband and I had never heard of this virus. To say we were absolutely terrified would be an understatement. We were filled with so many emotions ranging from devasted to fearful to angry. Why was this never mentioned as a possibility? In addition to having a bilateral sensorineural hearing loss, Camden has also dealt with several developmental delays. We are now a year into our journey and have watched our precious boy strive every day to overcome the disabilities he will continue to face throughout his life with so much determination. My husband and I pray that we use this cross we bear as an opportunity to spread awareness to all families about the prevention of CMV.
