Hello friends and family: If you found your way to my Boston Marathon fundraising webpage, it is because I have asked you to support me in raising money for the Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center (BCNC). BCNC is the largest nonprofit social service provider dedicated to Asian American and Asian immigrant families in the Greater Boston area, supporting over 2,600 children, youth, and adults each year at four locations in Boston and Quincy. The mission of BCNC is to ensure that the children, youth, and families we serve have the resources and support they need to achieve greater economic success and social well-being. BCNC helps families access the resources and services available to them, provides opportunities for them to learn and acquire skills, and creates a community of mutual support and encouragement. (For more information about BCNC, please go to www.bcnc.net.)
Now, I have told a lot of people that I got into running based on a new years resolution with some close friends. But, what I haven’t shared is that I am motivated to run the Boston Marathon by the efforts of my parents to get themselves into shape. My parents were so proud of my running that it motivated them to go to the gym and exercise. I made deal with them that if they run the BAA 5K, I will try and run the Boston Marathon. They kept their end of the bargain by signing up for the BAA 5k. Now, I need to keep mine. My parents will be in Boston to run the BAA 5K. So if you want to meet my parents, come cheer me on Marathon Monday and I will introduce you to them!
More importantly though, I am running the Boston Marathon in order to support BCNC. As many of you know, I am originally from San Francisco where being part of my cultural community was a big part of up bringing. When I was young, I was at Chinese school on the weekend and in the summers, I went to Chinese summer camps as well. Growing up, one the biggest accomplishments was an internship at the Chinese Culture Center of San Francisco where I was able to research my ancestral past and learn and visit my ancestral village in China.
Through this internship, I was able to not only establish roots in China, but also establish roots in the Chinatown community in San Francisco. This education and foundation has guided me to become the person I am today. By running for, and supporting, BCNC I hope to provide those same opportunities here to families in the in the Boston Chinatown community. Please join me in supporting BCNC and helping me run the Boston Marathon.
