On Sunday, October 6th, our family and friends will be participating in the 10th Anniversary of Hope Walks, a community walk to benefit the Mass General Cancer Center at Newton-Wellesley Hospital (NWH) in memory of our beloved Uncle Bill.
We created our team alongside Uncle Bill in 2010 where he wrote his Story of Hope for the event:
Bill's Story of Hope:
"Cancer- it’s the dreaded word no one wants to hear, much less talk about. But, once you overcome the initial shock, you turn your attention to the question: how exactly am I going to deal with this?
After going through surgery and many rounds of chemotherapy, I have learned a few things: it’s the simple things and quiet gestures that mean the most... "I'll keep you in my thoughts," "I'll remember you in my prayers," "Hey, how can I help you with that?" These are the things that bolster one's spirit and give you the strength to keep up the fight.
I have a great relationship with my doctor, Tim O'Connor. We share a love of golf and enjoy a good laugh. The team at the Vernon Cancer Center makes it all work. The doctors provide the intellectual and academic approach, and the nurses (Natalie, I mean you here) mother you and ask practical questions about how you are feeling and what needs attention. And don't forget the advice you get during chemo infusions! You spend a lot of time with these people and you get to know them. I have Jewish mothers I never thought I'd have, and they give me great advice.
HopeWalks means a lot to me because it will bring together patients, families, providers, and people from the community- this is the foundation of hope. The feeling of being together is critical for a successful battle against this disease. I look forward to seeing you all there.
Funds raised through this annual event give cancer patients access to life-saving treatments and highly individualized, compassionate care that treats every component of a patient’s wellbeing: physical, emotional and more.
We are excited to participate in the 10th Anniversary of Hope Walks and to send a strong message of HOPE to all those touched by cancer.
