Eleanor Tillmann, a mother of two who devoted her life to nursing patients in hospitals, psychiatric centers, and through private visits, passed away at the age of 69 on Saturday, June 13th. Nicknamed “Ellie” or “Tilly,” she lived in Queens for the last 40 years, often seen on the streets and in stores talking to friends and strangers alike. Eleanor’s larger than life demeanor, social personality, and sense of humor made her a popular figure at work, in the neighborhood and in the lives of her children and their friends. She was best known to family and friends as a helper. She dedicated her life to caring for patients who had challenges both mentally and physically and she was just as prepared to help someone in need while she was off duty. Eleanor's natural inclination to jump into a challenging situation to help however she could perfectly mirrors the way American Red Cross responds to emergency situations.
