If you know Sammy, you know that there is something special about him. 11 years ago in November Sammy was born with Spina Bifida unbeknownst to his family or doctors. It was at that moment that we should have realized that he was special, that he has a purpose on this Earth. For the first couple months life was hard, his parents and family didn't really understand how life was going to unfold for them. To say the least it was a scary time in our lives. But our perspective changed when we attended our first Walk N Roll 6 months after he was born. It was there that we saw people in all stages of life living with Spina Bifida, nothing was holding them back and we were determined to not let anything hold our Sammy back. That first year we had a dozen or so supporters and have grown exponentially since then, last year we were close to 90 supporters walking with us. We hope that you can join us this year, help support Team Sammy Mac III and all the others living with Spina Bifida.
Spina Bifida is the #1 birth defect in the world with no main cause, it can be hereditary however in most cases the cause is unknown. Every year over 1600 babies are born with Spina Bifida, approximately 7 in every 10,000 births.
Mission of the Spina Bifida Association of Colorado is to build a better and brighter future for all those affected by Spina Bifida.
We pursue our Mission by educating the public about the latest research on prevention, ex. the intake of folic acid before and during pregnancy. For those individuals and families already affected we bring them together through multiple activities to see they are not alone in there fight, that we are a community. We have individuals in their 70's and younger living with Spina Bifida, we can learn from each other how to get through the different stages of life. We learn how to prevent common medical issues, how to get through school with common learning conditions, how to pursue higher education, job, relationships etc.
Join us and support Spina Bifida Association of Colorado to educate the world about Spina Bifida and to enhance the lives of people in our community by bringing them together.
