Several years ago, Maria and I used to ride single bikes. This was obviously when we were young and foolish. We stopped that dangerous endeavor when I almost skidded (bike and all) into the lake at the top of Central Park. Not wanting to give up on our biking dreams, the smartest thing we ever did was become members of intandembike.org in 2009. Since then we’ve ridden many miles through all kinds of weather (except blinding blizzards) and have thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
For those unfamiliar with riding a tandem bike, it means there’s a capable, fully sighted Captain in the front and a blind/low vision rider in the back helping to provide the power.
Membership in the biking group is free but we do require humans to keep the bikes maintained, fees must be paid for the various rides and the entire thing has to be organized by someone—and that would be our current leader, Mr. Matthew Nidek et al.
We look forward to riding in the upcoming 5-borough tour—and, yes, it’s exactly what you might think—we really do ride through the five boroughs. And let me tell you, that darned Verrazano Bridge is up hill both ways! At least it feels as if it is.!<sigh>
This is my 2019 Crowdrize website. Matt (my fearless and faithful Captain, who just happens to be the son of our beloved former leader, Artie elefant, and I would appreciate any donation towards our tandem biking efforts and we truly thank you.
