Why I've joined Team Imerman Angels for the 2020 Bank of America Chicago Marathon!
2019 was not as I had planned. In early May, I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer and in late May I found out I have the BRCA-2 gene. June brought surgery and because I carry the BRCA-2 gene it was a bilateral mastectomy ( for pop-culture reference- what Angelina Jolie and Christina Applegate had) After surgery I had a follow up with my genetic counselor he happened to give me a list of resources and one resource for support was Imerman Angels. I told the counselor I had seen Imerman Angels running the Chicago Marathon a few years ago and then I went home and put the paperwork aside.
In late July I started chemo, and soon after I reached out to Imerman's Angels to see if I could connect with an Angel. I needed to talk to someone who had been in my shoes. I asked Imerman's Angels if they could find me an angel that was in Chicagoland, had my diagnosis, had the same chemo I was having, like to run and participate in exercise regularly - oh and if that person also had the BRCA-2 gene that would be really great. A tall order.
And if you can believe it--on my birthday no less- I got a call and email from my angel Margot Greer! She is the best. She had been in my shoes, she runs and she is a yoga instructor in Chicagoland --and she is BRCA 2 like me. I am so grateful for Imerman Angels and Margot. Our weekly talks always leave me uplifted and pumped. She gets me.
Today 12/5/2019 I finished chemo and now I get to enjoy the holidays, run and focus on 2020. I know it may seem a little crazy to run the 2020 marathon but A. Running is medicine for me. B. I need a big goal to focus on as I start life as a breast cancer survivor C. Imerman Angels is a great group and I want to give back as I run at the start of my 50th year of LIFE!
