Me: Hey, you want to run a Tough Mudder with me?
J.L.: Sure! You want to run a marathon?
Me: Uhh... Ok.
And that's how the story began. Before embarking on this journey/training, I never enjoyed running for sport. I do plenty of sports and activities that require running, but running was never the focus as it is with... well, running a marathon. Always up for a challenge and channeling Russell Westbrook's "Why Not" Jordan campain of 2018, I asked myself, why not. I was coming up on my 32nd birthday and I was looking for something to focus on for the upcoming year, so J.L.'s timing of a marathon offer/challenge couldn't have come at a better time.
Beyond the training and running, which I've found to be equal-parts rewarding, humbling, therapeutic, and annoying (lol), doing something that benefits others makes the process worthwhile. I have no shame in saying that I've always been the teacher's pet. I loved going to school and I love learning. I know for sure that the reason why I loved school and excelled at it was due to the wonderful teachers I had. That's why I'm running the Chicago Marathon on behalf of Team Golden Apple. To do my part in making sure that those who want to teach, can, and those who need to, remain. The Golden Apple Foundation is a non-profit in IL who's "...mission is to inspire, develop, and support teacher and school leader excellence...".
It doesn't have to be said that being a teacher is one of those most demanding and important jobs any person can do. Because so much of our future is riding on the success of good teachers in and outside of the classroom, why not throw support behind the very people who are guiding those kids? Golden Apple, and other organizations like it, provides this support. We all benefit in life from having someone in our corner, rooting for us, showing us the way, and helping in anyway needed. And that's why I'm running with Team Golden Apple. Are you with me???
Hopefully my legs and mind, come race day, are as motivational as this post! Lol.
Love you all! Thanks!
I'll try to add pics of my training as the race day gets nearer.
