In the early-1980’s, my mom & dad made a decision to move back to back to their hometown, Norfolk, VA in order to give my mother a chance of living a few more years with lung cancer. They wanted mom to be surround by family, friends and oncologists who would care for her health and wellbeing. My mom died in 1986, but she fought to live every day to “her fullest” and was dedicated to help her doctors understand what made cancer be cancer, by participating in “studies” and being open about what she was going through.
I am honored to call EVMS my place of employment and be able to participate in raising funds in making sure that others, like my mom, will have the opportunity to partake in the best course of treatment because of the translational research that the dedicated EVMS clinicians and scientists bring together, through connecting the laboratory with the physician’s office.
I will be walking the 8k in memory of my mom Betty DuVal Filer, in memory of my step-sister Lee Harkins & in honor of all who work at the The Leroy T. Canoles Jr. Cancer Research Center here at EVMS. With EVMS being dedicated to improving the way cancer is diagnosed and treated, the survival rate will increase, as does the hope that we can beat this disease once and for all. Please join me in honoring the memories of my mother, my step-sister and so many others. Every dollar you donate will go directly to cancer research. Thank you in advance for your consideration.
