Twenty years ago while I was serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Mali, I saw the effects of a lack of access to basic maternal health first hand. I worked at a local maternity. We were many miles from a paved road and nearly 100 miles to any kind of resourced health care center. Basic comforts for expecting mothers were non-existent. Complications during birth often had devastating consequences.
Years later after having an incredibly supported birthing experience, I've often reflected on how with small resource investments big changes can be made to help keep mothers and their babies safe during pregnancy and birth.
And that's why I'm running with Every Mother Counts. I've never done a fundraiser like this before but this is an organization with a mission that is deeply personal. And I hope their mission resonates with you as well.
A bit more about EMC:
Every Mother Counts is running the 2018 Golden Gate Half Marathon and 5K to raise awareness and funds to support maternal health around the world. Hundreds of thousands of women die during pregnancy and childbirth each year. That's 800 women every day. The good news is that up to 98% of these deaths can be prevented. Every Mother Counts is a non-profit organization dedicated to making pregnancy and childbirth safe for every mother. We run because often distance is the biggest barrier to a woman and her family getting the care they need. Simply put, we want to run so that others don't have to...And now, we're hoping you will lend your support no matter how big or small. Last year the Golden Gate team raised nearly $175K, help us raise even more in 2018!
Every Mile Counts because Every Mother Counts. Together, with your help and our miles, we can make pregnancy and childbirth safe for every mother.
