My name is Dexia Smith and I am taking on raising awareness for a cause that is near and dear to my family— Alzheimer’s Disease.
My grandpa, Donald “Banny” Joseph, had an aneurysm and a stroke in 1993.
He had no signs of Dementia until the late 90’s as he left to go to the store and couldn’t find his way home. The store was just RIGHT around the corner from the house..
Late 1998, he had brain surgery, beginning the onset of the Alzheimer’s Disease. From 2001 to his passing, he had several strokes and was basically in an ‘infant state’. Banny’s suffering was no more as he passed away January 3rd, 2007.
I was born December 24th, 1992. I never was able to know the awesome man that I always hear about when my family reminisces. I just recall him in his recliner chair, cracking me a smile whenever he saw me. Banny and Wulla’s (my beloved grandmother that passed away in ‘09) anniversary is also on December 24th. They had absolutely no problem sharing the date with their “Monèt” (my middle name). Banny was able to make it for their 50th anniversary in 2006, but passed away 10 days later💔 A picture of the final cake shared for our special occasion is above.
I’ve joined BvB Dallas— an organization that raises money for Alzheimer’s Disease research. The organization aims to “Tackle Alzheimer’s Forever”, hosting an annual powder-puff football game and fundraiser at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Saturday, August 10th.
I am on #TeamBruCrew and it would mean the world to me having your support by donating to such an amazing cause and attend Saturday night, August 10th, for kickoff at 7:30 p.m. to cheer me on the night of the game and help raise awareness!
Let’s #TackleAlzheimersDisease together!
No donation is too small💙
