As all of you know, I have been doing Team-N-Training for the past 9 years riding around Lake Tahoe and raising money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in Memory of my friend, dive buddy and shipmate, Ron Ervin who passed away of Leukemia in 2010. I accomplished my goal in 2015 by leading a team raising $100,000, and flew Ron's family out to South Lake Tahoe for the ride to present to them a research grant in his name. After that, Team Ride-4-Ron went on to continue raising money for reserch grants and we ended up with a total of five grants in 4 years.
So this year, I was ready for a little change and when I found out that one of the coaches wives was diagnosed in December 2017 with stage 4 Cholangiocarcinoma. It’s a big word for a very rare cancer of the bile duct. Some friends of mine and the family were putting a team together to raise money for this rare cancer. I was all In!
It’s a cancer that strikes about 8,000 people each year in the US and there is no known cure. We are doing this thru two main events, America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride (June 2, 2019 Lake Tahoe California) personal fundraising with a cycle team, and thru the Ride for Dad’s Golf Tournament (April 22, Serrano Golf Club). Working together with The Bili Project Foundation, we have set a goal to raise $100,000 for the Kathy Barboza Young Investigator Grant. This grant will fund a researcher at UCSF working to research early detection and treatments for Cholangiocarcinoma.
