Benji was a premature baby who was given twenty four hours to live. After six days of fighting Doctors didn't know what to do. They stated to us "he is going to have to go to a more specialized hospital. We can no longer care for him"
The nearest specialized hospital for children was two and a half hours away. At twenty eight days old, Benji had a total of six surgeries. He finally came home at 36 days old. During his first several appointments they advised us that he wouldn't live long and to enjoy every moment we could have with him. His first Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Years Eve we spent it in the hospital, where he had contracted Rotovirus. Again, as they cared for my tiny, tiny child, they told us repeatedly that his condition was so fragile he wouldn't live long.
He came home for the new year!
As Benji began to grow, we were told, he would never move his arm, his legs. he would never be able to hold his head up. He was born deaf, so he couldn't hear his parents say how much we loved him. We were told he would never be able to sit up. Every appointment was more and more negative. But, as long as he kept fighting, we kept fighting.
Fast foward, Benji will be 17 years old this summer. I've taken very scary risks and placed him on a horse to learn trunk control. He now knows how to properly sit on a horse and hold reins. I took a risk and put him in Baseball, he is now entering his fourth season of baseball, He learned and loves to play bowling. Next fall I am looking into putting him on the Special Olympics Bowling Team for our county. One major accomplishment Benji has done, he is on an adaptive ice skating team! Yes the child who spends 90% of the day in a wheelchair gets on the Ice and skates!
Now, our new challenge. We did our first 5K with Benji when he was nine years old. It was a good experience but also a scary one. 5Ks aren't the best sport to attempt with a regular wheelchair. We never did one again.
Since we have found Ainsley's Angels now I have hope! We can do 5K's again! maybe even work up to a 10K. The Sky is the limit! if Benji doesn't give up we won't give up. So will you help us make this goal?
Thank you all so much for your time in reading this story. Thank you for considering our fundraising.
