Mary is a 30-year old woman with a couple kids, trying to get her GED so she can get a better job and take care of her children. She makes minimum wage right now. She's been tutored at a local organization who helps adults, but her scores on practice tests won't get better. She struggles to read, to understand what she reads, and remember it. When someone reads for her, she understands it so much better. She's well-spoken, but writing what she's thinking is difficult and grammar and spelling is poor. She's embarrassed, frustrated, and stressed out. And so is the tutor! She thinks, "Why can't I help her? Why isn't this curriculum working? Am I that bad of a tutor?"
We at The LD Edge Network see this scenario, and others similar to this every day. You just read about someone with an undiagnosed specific learning disability like Dyslexia. She was well-behaved in school, but just barely passing her classes, and decided to drop out when she got pregnant. She was never assessed, so she didn't know! Until now.... we assessed her for free because her income is at the poverty level and our sliding scale subsidizes adults at that income level. Now she knows!
Now she can receive accommodations on her practice tests, and she can receive SPECIALIZED training with a tutor who has the basics in Orton-Gillingham, and trained with the Wilson Reading System. She'll have to work harder than anyone else, but you know what? Her life is about to CHANGE for the BETTER!
It's a mountain of a barrier - dyslexia. We're here to help our clients up that mountain with a pool of resources that include assessments, accommodations support, specialized tutoring, and goal setting. But climbing this mountain takes a lot of money! And that's what this fund is for!
The Target Literacy Program needs that one certified and trained teacher to run it's tutoring program on a daily basis! YOUR DONATION will help fund this new Program Leader, the supplies, trainings, and tutoring sessions. PLEASE consider donating to this fund. It will be the best use of your money, and going to a forgotten segment of our population for a silent disability that is difficult to see.
Thank you for any support you can give!
