Most of you know I run ultra-marathons. Many of you know I shouldn’t be running at all let alone ultra-marathons, because I was hit by the flatbed of semi while trying to cross the street. The truck came out of nowhere, was making a right hand turn trying to beat the light, took the turn in a way where his flatbed came over the sidewalk hitting me in my upper back/neck & shoulder areas throwing me a few feet into the grass & dirt. I had surgery to put a plate in my neck, shoulder surgery & will have spinal pain for the rest of my life. The doctors said I’d never run or be active again because of my pain levels. I said we’ll see about that (my real words were more along the lines of: f$@k that. It’s all mental. I’ll show you.) The doctors just said well, I’ve never seen anyone do it. To which I said, you don’t know me! Left & never looked back.
It’s in this vein that I decided to sign up for Donna 110 mile ultra-marathon for breast cancer awareness. This vein of not taking for granted what we have and what we can do. This vein of not letting someone else tell us what we're capable of. This vein of showing everyone including ourselves what we're made of. This race is born out of the Donna Marathon and Half-Marathon inspired by the 110% Play Harder Challenge. Donna is a triple breast cancer survivor that decided to use her local Jacksonville celebrity status to help raise money to fight breast cancer and fund research. Her foundation, The Donna Foundation, helps support those and their families going through this fight.
Come hell or high water, I’ll cross that finish line for all of us. For all of us that have overcome anything & everything. For all of the survivors, pre-vivors, their families, the ones who fought their hardest and didn’t make it & for those to come. Those that have fought through cancer in any way and the family and friends that have stood alongside them know pain, know perseverance, and know what the human mind, spirit and body are capable of.
My goal is to raise $2000 over the next 5 weeks. This is one of the only races in the country where ONE HUNDRED PERCENT of the proceeds goes to the research & charities for breast cancer, so know that your money is going directly into making a difference & giving us a fight chance at beating breast cancer.
The race is over 2 days beginning on Sat Feb 9, 2019 where I’ll run 83.8 miles & it culminates on Sun Feb 10 where I toe the line with the marathoners for a 26.2-mile finish. I hope you’ll join me in my stand against breast cancer & donate even if it’s only $5.
Thank you for your support and donation to help end breast cancer. Sincerely,
