My name is Sydney and I’m turning 15 years old this month. Instead of asking for gifts for my birthday this year, I have decided to ask for everyone to donate to the charity WE Charity. The reason I have decided to do this is because of the trip to Ecuador that I had the opportunity to go on earlier this year. This trip allowed me to volunteer in a small community called Bellavista in the amazon rainforest. This part of the trip stood out more to me than anything else. Me to We has been helping Bellavista for more than 5 years, and they have helped them to obtain a clean water source, and are now in the process of building school houses. Meeting and observing the people of Bellavista made me realize that I, as well as MANY others, take what we have for granted. Watching and playing with the kids in the community reminded me so much of the kids I worked with while I was a camp counsellor. I’ve realized through these experiences that everyone on this planet is born the same. Some are just lucky enough to be born in a better place. What I learned while i was there, is that while the children in Canada would likely go on to attend university and live a stable life, the children in Bellavista would likely stop going to school after 9th grade, because there is no school to attend. If you lived in Bellavista and wanted to continue school, you would have to move away from home (only if you had enough money, which was very unlikely). This means that most students will never get the education that they deserve. Upon arriving home from my trip to Ecuador I have become much more aware of all of the blessings that I have in Canada. Simple things like being able to go to school and have clean water to drink are things that I will never take for granted again. So, the only thing I am hoping for for my birthday this year is that friends and family (and friends of family😁) consider donating to We Charity, the organization that has brought me to these realizations and continuously helped thousands of people around the world.
