I will swim to honor two people.
First, my father Thomas Love served in the US Coast Guard for 22 years. Dad flew in helicopters and search planes as a Chief Electronics Technician across North America- from Bermuda to Florida to Alaska and back.
Dad we miss you and honor your service.
I also swim to honor a US Army medic, Specialist 4th Class James Thomas Love, who died in Vietnam in 1968.
Like so many others who died while serving, James gave his life at such a young age, before really having had a chance to live. James is buried in Pine Level, Alabama. I plan to visit his grave early next year.
In contrast, I am grateful to have been blessed with a full life, healthy children, a loving partner, and a meaningful job for which i was well paid.
I cannot easily express the depth and complexity of my feelings about James' service and death, but I aim to keep the memory of his life and sacrifice alive.
James, brother in name, I honor and remember you.
